Fire destroys sports pavilion

FIREFIGHTERS spent half the night tackling a blaze at a boarding school's sports pavilion.

The fire at St Mary's School in South Ascot started around 10.30pm last night (Sunday) and took 15 firefighters around three hours to extinguish.

Students from the girls school in St Mary's Road watched in vain as the flames took hold and completely destroyed the building, which is next to the hockey pitch and tennis courts.

A groundsman's shed next to the building was also close to catching alight but the crews managed to stop the flames spreading there.
