Wokingham Town Hall

TWO months into the job and one of my top priorities is to agree a way forward for enhancing Wokingham Town Centre. The proposed Peach Place and Elms Field redevelopments have made some tentative steps along this route but we need to agree an over-arching plan that sets out clearly how everyone can do their bit to make Wokingham an even more vibrant place for all to enjoy.

Wokingham offers a great quality of life and we need to ensure that it offers that to all comers, now and in the future.

Part of that will be about preserving and enhancing what is good – such as its inherent character, opportunities for high quality education, the green and heritage nature of some of our rural areas – to mention just a few.

It is also about embracing progress so that this quality of life which we all value so much can be sustained.

This might mean ensuring good vehicular and pedestrian access to the town centre and around the Borough as well as continued investment in skills and education.

All of this will not only help to preserve what we have – especially the town’s unique character –- but to ensure that the opportunities for leisure, shopping, entertainment and cultural activities are enhanced, making Wokingham THE place to be and something really special for everyone.

The life that will flow from this vibrant and viable town will be incredible – not only for those of us who live and work here now but for future generations.

And my aspirations aren’t just limited to Wokingham Town Centre. I want to develop a

far-reaching vision for the whole of the Wokingham Borough, working with residents and businesses to paint a picture of what we want the Borough to be.

Making a positive difference to people’s lives is what makes local government so exciting.

With the best will in the world Wokingham is always going to be one of the less salubrious areas of Berkshire. Instead of spending time 'spinning' that it's more fabulous than it is, why not actually get to providing council services to make it a truly better place for its residents?
