FORGET riding through the glen – this year Robin Hood will be galloping into one of the region’s biggest equestrian events.

Heroes and villains is the theme for this year’s fancy dress class at the Royal Windsor Horse Show where Robin – aka nine-year-old James Harris – will be representing the Warfield branch of the Riding for the Disabled Association.

James will be joined by fellow Palmer CE (Aided) Junior School pupil Ruby-Jane Clarke as they take part in the class dressed as Robin and his consort Maid Marian in the Riding for the Disabled fancy dress competition on Thursday, May 8, at 12.45pm.

Margaret-Anne Hobson, chairman of the Warfield branch, said: “It’s all in fancy dress – the children are dressed up, the helpers are dressed up and even the horses are dressed up.

“And because I’m the chair I’ll be dressed as the Sheriff of Nottingham.”

Only two children from the school, in Norreys Avenue, Wokingham, can take part in the class each year and Mrs Hobson said James and Ruby-Jane are looking forward to the show, which takes place in the grounds of Windsor Castle.

She said: “They’ll be hyper by next week. They can’t wait to ride in front of the Queen at the Windsor Horse Show. It’s such a major event and it’s so exciting for them.”

On the same day, members of the Riding for the Disabled Association will be taking to horse-drawn carriages for Driving for the Disabled, which takes place at 3.20pm in the Frogmere Arena.

The show takes place from Wednesday, May 7, to Sunday, May 11, and this year features the first Windsor Castle Royal Tattoo – a floodlit spectacular celebrating the armed forces which will be on the Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Day membership badges for the horse show cost from £30 on Thursday and Friday.

Standard tickets cost £13 for adults, £9 for concessions and £4 for children aged five to 16. Discounts are available for MOD90 cardholders as part of Value for Valour. Quote Valour when booking tickets.
