A PIRATE-themed fun day packed full of activities for all the family will also contain a serious message.
The event at Moss End Garden Centre, Miadenhead Road, Warfield is being organised by Sammy Morgan, whose mother Regina died of bowel cancer at the age of 61 just 21 days after first being diagnosed.
Attractions at the all day event this Saturday and Sunday will include pirate fancy dress, traditional country fete games such as ‘hook a duck’, as well helium balloons.
Miss Morgan, who is opening the Artique Gallery in Windsor in mid May, wanted to create the event as the first of many in memory of her mother. She has named a fund called the Reggie’s Blooms Memorial Fund as her mother liked flowers.
Miss Morgan wants to raise £2m for the charity over the next two years and has set herself a £10k target for July.
She said: “I want to raise awareness of bowel cancer and as much money as possible for Bowel Cancer UK.
“As April is Bowel Cancer Awareness month, what better time to start off the summer fundraising programme. My aim is to raise £10k before July 2008. As further proof of the gallery’s connection to my mother’s memory, I have pledged to give 25% of the net profits annually to Bowel Cancer UK in an effort to support other patients and hopefully prevent others dying from the disease.”
She is launching the Artique Gallery with money her mother left her and it will specialise in selling mounted photographs, large canvasses and bespoke framing and portraits of children, families and animals.
Moss End Garden Centre co-owner Vanessa Day decided to get on board after Miss Morgan visited her last year and told her about the idea she had of setting up Artique.
Mrs Day said: “We just think it’s a good idea and are behind her 100%. It’s mainly to make people aware of cancer. My son Anton got Leukeamia at the age of 18 so its something which is close to our heart.”
Anton, who is now 24 and in remission, works at Moss End and is helping to organise the event. Bowel Cancer UK spokeswoman Louise Ellis said: “Sammy is an inspiring example of someone who has managed to produce a positive outcome out of a tragic loss.”
Entrance is free.
